When the Glass You Need Isn't a Windshield: Our Custom Flat Glass Work

Most people who call us are thinking about a car windshield, and most days that's exactly what we're doing. But windshields aren't the only glass we work on. A good chunk of the week is spent cutting flat glass for jobs that have nothing to do with a vehicle at all: a house window that shattered in a storm, a storm door panel that a grandkid put a baseball through, a cracked RV window nobody stocks anymore, or a flat glass panel on a piece of industrial or heavy equipment that's been sitting out of commission because the part is nowhere to be found. If it's flat glass and something broke it, there's a decent chance we can cut a replacement.

Why this kind of job even exists

Auto glass shops don't usually advertise this side of the business, but the reason we do comes straight from what our customers kept running into. Sometimes the replacement part for whatever broke is either unavailable or hard to find, and if you do track it down, it can be extremely expensive to have shipped and fitted. That's a rough spot to be in: your storm door is unusable, or a window in the house has a sheet of plywood over it, and the manufacturer either doesn't make that panel anymore or wants a small fortune for it. If we're able to cut the glass to the size and shape you need, you get a real fix instead of a waiting game, and it usually saves you both time and money over chasing down a factory-exact part.

House windows and storm doors

A broken house window or storm door panel is one of the more common calls we get outside of vehicles. Storm doors in particular take a beating here in Nebraska, wind-driven hail, a door that gets caught in a gust and slams into something, or just age making the glass brittle enough that normal use finally cracks it. If the manufacturer's replacement panel is discontinued, which happens more often than you'd think once a storm door model is a few years old, we can measure the opening and cut a piece of flat glass to fit rather than you trying to track down an exact-match part or replacing the whole door.

RVs and equipment nobody else wants to touch

RV glass is its own headache. A lot of RV manufacturers use panel shapes and sizes specific to that model year, and once a manufacturer stops making a particular trailer or motorhome, the glass for it can be next to impossible to source through normal channels. Industrial and heavy equipment is similar: a cab window or panel on an older piece of machinery might not have a listed replacement part anywhere, especially if the equipment itself is older or the manufacturer has moved on to a newer design. In both cases, the alternative to a custom cut is often leaving the equipment down and out of use, or paying a steep premium for a special order that takes weeks to arrive. We'd rather just cut the piece and get you back to using whatever it is that's sitting broken.

What we need from you to get it right

• The exact opening dimensions, or the broken piece itself if you still have it, so we can match the cut precisely.
• Whether the glass needs to be tempered, laminated, or a specific thickness, if you know that from the original part.
• Photos of the frame or opening help us plan the job before you even bring it in.
• If it's a vehicle, RV, or piece of equipment, the make, model, and year narrow things down fast.

We can't promise every job is a fit for a custom cut. Some glass has curves, tints, coatings, or safety features baked into the original part that a flat cut can't reproduce, and we'll tell you plainly if that's the case rather than sell you a piece that won't actually solve the problem. But for a genuinely flat pane, on a house, a storm door, an RV, or a piece of equipment, it's worth a call before you assume the part is gone for good.
